Do you remember Grease 2? A timeless tale of young love, motorcycles and excessive bowling, it was the film that kickstarted Michelle Pfeiffer’s career whilst effectively ending that of leading man Maxwell Caulfield. Now, event promoters Tegan&Holly are bringing this unintentionally hilarious classic back to the Toronto big screen along with entertainment from surf punk band The Space Dusters as part of #SEQUELSERIES.
Grease 2 was released in 1982, four years after the original Grease came out. It aimed to capitalise on the enormous success of the original film but instead was a huge flop, performing badly at the box office and receiving withering reviews. Pfeiffer plays bad girl Stephanie Zinone, part of the Pink Ladies and only interested in dating greasers. Caulfield is her opposite number as Michael Carrington, a cute but clean-cut British student and a recent transfer to Rydell High School. His attempts to win Stephanie’s heart by masquerading as the shadowy ‘cool rider’ are punctuated by a series of bizarre musical numbers including Reproduction, a song about the facts of life. Yes really.
The event takes place on Friday March 9 at legendary Toronto venue Cinecycle. A bicycle shop during regular business hours, once the sun goes down the space is transformed into a movie theatre complete with its own projection booth and bar. Cinecycle is not the kind of place a person might stumble across by accident, tucked away down a Spadina alleyway between Richmond Street West and Adelaide Street West. Instead, it relies on word-of-mouth to bring people through its doors.
“Trashy cinema is a passion of ours,” said event organiser Tegan Wylie. “And the failed sequel is often the epitome of trash. There’s a huge amount of enjoyment to be gleaned from the so-bad-they’re-good films. By mixing movies with music and an ultra-relaxed environment, #SEQUELSERIES is a great opportunity to experience these great films in a social environment.”
Musical entertainment comes from local band The Space Dusters. The band plays tightly-executed surf punk standards that bring to mind Dick Dale, The Ventures and the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. Following their raucous set The Lazy DJ will be playing a selection of records from the 1950s through to the 1980s guaranteed to get the crowd dancing.
The screening is part of #SEQUELSERIES. The result of a discussion about a shared love of campy, ridiculous cinema and eighties fashion, #SEQUELSERIES is a three-part concept party fusing films, bands and beats in one of Toronto’s coolest venues. Each event will match a terrible (yet delightful) sequel with a amazing bands and DJs that reflect the film’s aesthetic. Upcoming movies include Short Circuit 2 and Troll 2, widely considered to be one of the worst movies of all time.
Doors open at 8.30 p.m.. The bar will be serving beers, mixed drinks and popcorn. Advance tickets are available from http://grease2sequelseries.eventbrite.com/
